Lawn Lake |
The Lawn Lake was a natural lake until 1903 when a dam was built. In July of 1982 the dam failed sending 29 million gallons of water down the valley. The torrent of water tossed boulders, snapped trees, and gouged out parts of mountains. The Alluvial Fan is an awe inspiring sight, as well as farther up the Roaring River. The Lawn Lake is now at the same level it was before the dam was built.
The trail is about 13 miles round trip. Some of the trail is along the Roaring River, with steep walls and loose footing along the valley. Watch your step, and don't drop any equipment. In winter, take a pair of snowshoes and crampons. The trail will hold ice and deep snow. In summer, be ready for mud and possible rain showers.
Once you reach Lawn Lake, be sure to get a good look at what is left of the dam. Pretty amazing what water can do! About 0.75 miles past Lawn Lake, is Crystal Lake, another sight worth the extra travel. To the North of the Lakes is the Mummy Range, with Mummy Mountain, 13,425 feet.
